First TV channel airs, first 1,000 television sets arrive from the US

Thailand entered the television age on National Day when the country’s first TV station, H81-TV, began broadcasting.

The station was owned by the Thai Television Company, under the chairmanship of Pol Gen Phao Sriyanond. Newsreels about Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram and other events were shown during the first daytime broadcasts. In the evening, viewers saw the programme ‘Night in Venice.’

In April, about a thousand television sets had arrived in Bangkok from the Radio Corporation of America, and were sold for about 6,000 to 8,000 baht each Transmitting equipment had arrived in Bangkok from the Radio Corporation of America in late May of 1954. The first closed-circuit TV transmission was achieved in 1952.
