The King and I’ banned in Thailand

Despite its massive popularity abroad, Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram announced that the American film and theatre production ‘The King and I’ was banned in Thailand. ‘Anything that may adversely affect Thai-US relations should not be permitted to take place,’ Plaek said, explaining that Thais would be deeply offended by the script’s portrayal of the monarchy, explaining that it could also increase anti-American sentiment among the public. ‘Asian and Western customs are different,’ Plaek said. The ban was widely believed to have been recommended by Bangkok’s Governor Chalor Wanaputi who said ‘public opinion’ opposed the fictional story.
