Now the world’s top rice exporter

The United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) announced that Thailand had replaced Burma (Myanmar) as the world’s largest exporter of rice.

Bangkok’s 1964 rice exports amounted to 7.4 million tonnes, worth more than $900 million, according to the FAO—although its report excluded the communist nations of China, North Vietnam and North Korea.

With its stocks replenished by a successful harvest, Thailand decided on July 16 to send 100 tonnes of free rice to South Vietnam. Recent Thai trade missions to Poland, India and Africa helped increase Bangkok’s rice exports. Mauritius, Senegal, Madagascar, and the Ivory Coast were especially keen to purchase Thai rice.
