Television explodes into colour
Thailand’s first experimental colour TV show was seen by a captivated audience on eight sets featuring 24-inch screens in front of the Royal Hotel.
Colour sets at the time were twice the price of black-and-white TVs. Before investing too heavily in colour, ‘we must improve our black-and-white television first,’ the Thai Television Company said.
Later, in November, the first scheduled colour broadcasts were made on Army TV Channel Seven. They were the first in Southeast Asia, and only viewers within 4km of the station could catch the colour signal. People with black-and-white sets watched the same programmes on Channel Nine. About 100 fortunate people in the country owned colour TVs. Broadcasts were initially for two hours a day, but soon increased to six. Programmes like the Miss Thailand contest, plus sports and royal events were shown in colour to viewers in Bangkok and Thon Buri.
