Thanom launches a campaign against mini-skirts

Prime Minister Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn condemned girls who wore mini-skirts, and told the National Cultural Council to ban short dresses and tight slacks from official buildings.

‘Whenever I have a chance to meet students, I always ask them to help preserve our charming Thai culture,’ the prime minister said.

Thanom told the Education Ministry to be strict with students who appeared on campus in mini-skirts. A few days later, the ministry banned teachers from taking up the new fashion.

‘Women teachers should dress in such a way that will command respect from students,’ said Education Minister Sukich Nimmanheminda.
