Pattaya gets status of independent city
The increasingly popular beach resort of Pattaya was set to become only the second city in Thailand to be an independent administrative area.
Pattaya was originally classified as a ‘sanitation zone’ under the Naklua administrative zone. The move was intended to allow Pattaya authorities to streamline their work and maintain better control of environmental problems. Slums, pollution and crime had all increased since Pattaya became popular with local and foreign tourists. The new Pattaya administration would be given power to deal with those and other problems.
