A major step towards energy independence

Thailand took a historic step towards self-sufficiency in energy when South Bangkok Power Plant generated electricity using the Gulf of Thailand’s natural gas deposits.

It was the first time the country had produced power from its own natural gas. Union Oil pumped the gas from the Erawan fields through a 425km pipeline to Rayong, where a Petroleum Authority of Thailand plant refined and pressurised the gas before sending it to power plants in Bangkok.
