First automatic teller machine installed
The country’s first automatic teller machine (ATM) was installed by Siam Commercial Bank, heralding a new era of personal banking in Thailand. The machine promised service in 30 seconds.
In 1984, Thai Farmers Bank installed ATMs in 60 locations across the capital, providing around-the-clock ‘instant cash’. This rapid expansion was the first by a commercial bank since an announcement by the Bank of Thailand to shelve all requests for permission to install ATMs. The central bank’s decision was linked to the country’s trade deficit of about 75 billion baht at the time.
