Tawee grabs silver medal
Boxer Tawee Ampornmaha returned to a hero’s welcome after becoming the country’s first competitor to win an Olympic silver medal.
He was given a rousing reception by thousands of fans at Don Mueang Airport after returning from Los Angeles. Bangkok organised victory parades and televised celebrations to honour the welterweight boxer.
It proved to be a successful year for several Thai boxers, with the country gaining its eighth and ninth world champions. On October 18, 22-year-old Sot Chitalada outboxed Mexico’s Gabriel Bernal at the National Stadium to win the flyweight crown. And later in the year, on November 21, a triumphant ‘Khaosai Galaxy’ continued his rise to international stardom, knocking out Eusebio Espinal of the Dominican Republic in the sixth round to win the World Boxing Association’s junior bantamweight crown at the Ratchadamnoen Stadium in Bangkok.
