Celebrations for King peak Marathon, Royal Barge Procession highlight birthday pageantry

85,000 runners helped inaugurate Rama IX Bridge, joining a ‘Royal Marathon’ to mark His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s upcoming 60th birthday on December 5.

The bridge was officially opened to the public by Prime Minister Prem Tinsulanonda, who led a candle-lit ceremony presided over by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The royal anthem, the singing of ‘Oh Great King’ and a colourful display of fireworks created a memorable finale to the day-long event.
