Chalerm Thai’s final curtain‌

After presenting stage and film shows for nearly half a century, the Chalerm Thai Theatre was set to close down to pave the way for the construction of a royal reception pavilion and a statue of King Rama III.

Prayong Obom, 50, who had worked at the theatre for 30 years, said it would be officially returned to the Treasury Department at the end of the month. ‘I feel sorry for the old architecture and building design that will disappear,’ he said.

The theatre had 53 employees, who had agreed to find new jobs and accept compensation. Film projectors, transformers, the screen and other equipment were removed and donated to the National Film Archive.
