Cabinet approves subway proposal

The Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority’s 21km electric train project connecting Bang Sue to Hua Lamphong would be completely underground, the cabinet decided.

The decision increased the estimated cost of civil works for the project from 40 billion baht to 60 billion baht. There was discussion about whether part of the rail line, from Huai Kwang to Bang Sue, should be elevated, but the idea was scrapped for environmental reasons. Education minister Sukhavich Rangsitphol opposed the idea and soon found support from Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa and the cabinet.
