Cabinet rules Hopewell project hopeless

After six years of delay and haggling, the $3.3-billion Hopewell road and rail project would be scrapped, the transport and communications minister said.

The cabinet cancelled the contract after growing concern that the local subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Hopewell Holdings would not be able to deliver its Bangkok Elevated Road and Train System on time.

Hopewell, however, denied the project had been terminated, saying it had not received any official notice from the Thai government. Hopewell chairman Sir Gordon Wu said the company had fulfilled its commitments under the deal to construct the 60km road and rail network.
