New airport at Nong Ngu Hao tapped

The government confirmed plans to build a new airport at Nong Ngu Hao (‘Cobra Swamp’) as the capital’s only international airport, despite demands that the current Don Mueang Airport also be allowed to serve travellers flying to and from foreign countries.

Slated to open in 2004, Nong Ngu Hao would serve around 40 million passengers a year. The New International Airport Development Committee said a single international airport would reduce costs.

‘This will avoid chaos and problems in transferring passengers, cargo and related staff between Nong Ngu Hao and Don Mueang,’ agreed the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Japanese and South Korean companies competed for contracts to build the new airport, but Thai-linked firms were expected to get the best deals.
