World’s monarchs pay tribute to King, country abuzz with celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of HM’s accession

Thais cheered, wept and bowed with respect to celebrate the 60th anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne. Many people wore yellow shirts, symbolising the day on which he was born, to show their unity and devotion.

Visiting royals from 25 countries, including 13 monarchs, four royal consorts, six crown princes and two royal representatives, gathered in Bangkok to celebrate with the King. Along with his royal guests, the King witnessed the grand spectacle of the 15th Royal Barge Procession.

The King thanked well-wishers, saying their spirit of kindness had lifted his inner strength. ‘Everyone should think and act with honesty while staying true to the rules and respecting equality,’ he said.

Photographs of the emotional jubilee celebrations were purchased by people to mount on walls or preserve in scrapbooks.

Hundreds of thousands of people thronged the Royal Plaza, while millions watched a live TV broadcast of the event. The jubilee also provided a welcome relief from the worsening political confrontations, and gave people a chance to display their affection for their traditions, country and society.
