Public appearances by His Majesty gladden Thai hearts
The most significant public appearance of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great in 2012 was his birthday celebrations and Grand Audience at Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall on December 5. Around 200,000 people turned out to wish the King good health and prosperity.
Members of the public also vowed to take heed of the King’s birthday speech in which he called on Thais to show goodwill and compassion toward one another for the sake of the nation’s harmony and stability.
Before that, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great made a variety of public appearances which brought great joy and happiness to his subjects. His Majesty had been under medical supervision at Siriraj Hospital since 2009. People from across the country visited the hospital to sign well-wishers’ books and give their blessings for His Majesty’s speedy recovery and good health. His Majesty’s health improved enough for him to make frequent public appearances, including his first trip outside Bangkok in the three years since he was admitted to the hospital.
On May 25, the King left Siriraj Hospital for a trip to Thung Makham in Ayutthaya where he paid homage to the memorial of Queen Suriyothai, who led Siamese troops into battle with Myanmar soldiers in the Ayutthaya era. His Majesty also harvested rice in a royal project initiated 16 years earlier.
On July 7, the King boarded the royal vessel ‘Angsana’ and travelled from Siriraj Hospital to Ko Kret and the Royal Irrigation Department in Samsen to preside over the opening of five flood prevention projects.
As for official functions, His Majesty attended the royal cremation ceremony of HRH Princess Bejaratana Rajasuda at Sanam Luang in April. His Majesty also granted audiences to visiting royals and world leaders, including US President Barack Obama and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (November 18) and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (November 21).
