Thailand crowned top durian exporter for 2021

Thailand rose to the top spot as the world’s number one exporter of durians, the undisputed King of Fruits.

Thai durians clinched the lion’s share in the Chinese market with its insatiable appetite for the prized fruit. In the first quarter of the year, US$186 million worth of durians were exported to China, a hike of 14% from the same period in 2020.

In distant second place was Hong Kong which imported US$14 million worth of durians from Thailand, followed by Vietnam with durian imports valued at US$10 million.

Given the growth in durian-growing areas in Thailand over the past decade, which rose 30%, durian production was forecast to rise by 83% from 2021-2025, according to Aat Pisanwanich, director of the Centre for International Trade Studies at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.

The average annual volume of durians produced from 2021-2025 was tipped to be 2.02 million tonnes, compared to 1.11 million tonnes in 2020.

Durian exports to China expanded steadily since 2003. The Free Trade Agreements with several countries proved to be a boon for exports to 17 countries, including nine in Asean.
