Bangkok Bank opens first overseas branch

Bangkok Bank became the first Thai bank to have operations overseas when it opened a branch in Hong Kong

The Ministry of Economic Affairs was a major stockholder and its deputy minister, Maj Gen Siri Siriyothin, travelled to Hong Kong for the opening. Chin Sophonpanich, who founded the bank in 1944, later moved to Hong Kong following disagreements with government after the 1957 military coup.
