Bangkok hosts SEAP Games

Thailand hosted the inaugural Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games, and dominated the final tally of medals.

The five-day SEAP Games were hailed as a success despite Cambodia’s withdrawal weeks before the event began, amid anxiety that its athletes would be in danger because of possible anti-Cambodian protests linked to a border dispute with Thailand.

The sports at the games included basketball, volleyball, weightlifting, boxing, shooting and athletics. An electronic photo-finish time-keeping system, accurate to a hundredth of a second, was used during track events to conform with Olympic regulations

Participants of all member countries, which included Burma (Mynmar), Laos, Malaya, Thailand and Vietnam, stayed up in Chart Songkroh School. Thailand topped the final table by nabbing 76 medals, including 35 golds. Burma (Mynmar) came second, with 11 golds among its haul of 40 medals.
