Last nine trams reach the end of the line

Bangkok’s last nine trams were removed from their tracks because they were considered too expensive to operate and blocked vehicle traffic.

Employees working on the tramlines, including many elderly, were transferred to other jobs in the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, which had run the trams. Some workers on the tram network spoke out to defend the transport system.

‘We always ran on our tracks. It’s the cars and buses that ran in our way, and forced us to stop,’ a driver said. Bangkok was the first Asian city to use trams when they were introduced to Thailand about 70 years earlier.
