Hotel is capital’s tallest building

Tourists and well-to-do residents were served by a new luxury hotel called the Dusit Thani, on the corner of Silom and Rama IV Roads.

The hotel, when completed, became the tallest building in the capital. Founded by Chanut Piyaoui, the hotel launched with an advertising campaign stating, ‘we have a room just right for every mood.’

The Dusit’s facilities included Bimbo’s Show Bar and a rooftop lounge named Tiara. The name Dusit Thani, meaning Town in Heaven, was a term coined in 1918 by King Rama VI for a utopian model society. An equestrian statue of the King stands opposite the hotel outside Lumpini Park.
