Open university launched 50,000 freshmen sign up to study at Ramkhamhaeng

Tens of thousands of pioneering students filled National Stadium for an induction ceremony to mark the opening of the country’s first open university.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Praphas Charusathien presided over the ceremony, calling upon the first group of Ramkhamhaeng University students to uphold the reputation of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great, after whom the university was named.

Almost 50,000 freshers crowded into the stadium during the orientation ceremony, which marked a considerable step forward for tertiary education. University rector Dr Sakdi Pasuknirant said an unlimited number of places would be offered for four faculties: law, business administration, humanities and education. Unlike other universities, Ramkhamhaeng students would not be required to attend classes. ‘But classes will nevertheless be arranged for those students who want to attend,’ Dr Sakdi said.
