First trade made on stock exchange

Bangkok Bank became the first company to have its shares traded on Thailand’s new stock market as The Securities Exchange of Thailand (SET) opened for business at the Siam Trade Centre.

The SET debuted in a ceremony presided over by former Finance Minister Sommai Hoontrakul, who played a major role in its establishment, and was at the time the chairman of the Industrial Finance Corporation of Thailand. He called on everyone to support the new market and help the country’s economic development.

The first trade was executed by Haw Par Brothers International (Thailand), which purchased Bangkok Bank shares.

With only 10 companies initially listed, trading was limited to between 10.30am and 12.30pm on weekdays. On opening day, 15,380 shares were traded for a total value of 1,977,712 baht.
