China’s Deng Xiaoping arrives on historic visit

Thailand’s fence-mending with its regional neighbours continued as the Chinese senior vice president, Deng Xiaoping, began a historic five-day visit to Thailand. On his first day, he attended the ordination of Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

Greeted by thousands of Chinese-Thais when he arrived at Don Mueang Airport, Deng was the highest-ranking official to visit Thailand since diplomatic ties were established in 1975. During his visit, Deng and Foreign Minister Huang Hua agreed to two documents promoting trade, scientific and technical cooperation between Thailand and China.
