The First Supermarket in Thailand in 1996

Tops Supermarket became the no.1 go-to place for customers looking for the biggest range of foods and groceries with over 20,000 items, including dining areas, coffee shops, and bakeries, all under the same roof. The heart of its service has always been offering fresh and hygienic foods from trustworthy sources from all around the world to its customers in surrounding communities. Tops also commits to deliver excellent customer satisfaction with unparalleled services, innovative technologies and a smile.

Tops was founded towards the end of the century, when its first Distribution Centre was built in 1998 to foster business stability and enhance service potential. The idea was to build a strong foundation for future expansion and meet the growing demands of customers. Before long, driven by consumer demand, Tops expanded to include multiple branches nationwide.

Accomplishments & Payback to Customers

In 2004, Central Retail Corporation was established after over 46 venture stores of Tops Supermarket were bought out from Royal Ahold Co., Ltd., giving Central complete administrative rights and opportunities to fully cater to customers’ varied needs and lifestyles with unrivalled products and services.

Along with leading quality service and management, product safety for customers has always been the first priority in Tops’ operations. In 2004, Tops was the first supermarket in Thailand to receive the Golden Q Award from the Ministry of Public Health, along with food safety certification for its Distribution Centre. This provided reassurance that throughout every stage, from farming to storage to distribution, great care is always taken to serve Tops’ customers with the highest possible hygiene and safety standards.

The same year, Tops also launched Thailand’s first loyalty programme, SPOT Rewards Card, to gain a better understanding of customers’ shopping behaviours in order to develop products and services closely aligned with their needs. The card also allowed customers to enjoy various benefits, ranging from getting discounts to receiving special member services and participating in exclusive events and activities.

This gaining of customers’ trust and preference paved the way for the opening of various more brands under the company’s umbrella. The first Central Food Hall at Central Chidlom was introduced towards the end of 2005, catering the greatest local and international assortment of products. The expansion was closely followed by the launch of urban Tops market at Thong Lor in 2006, and Tops daily under the concept “All Your Daily Needs” in 2007. The company’s sense of modernity earned numerous retail awards over the years. It also gained acknowledgement for social and environmental sustainability, notably, Tops’ Go Green Project—No Plastic Bag Campaign in 2008, and Mobile Library Project with UNICEF in 2016. As of 2019, the company adopted a policy to stop automatically handing out plastic bags to shoppers.

Refinements Onwards

As the network began to thrive, in 2010 the supermarket chain partnered with a number of banks and companies to create selective benefits for customers through various initiatives.

By being well-prepared for the rising popularity of online connections, in 2010 Tops became one of the first grocery stores in Thailand to go online. Today, Tops Online, rebranded from Tops Shop Online, offers over 10,000 quality foods and grocery items to customers via its platform. Unlike any other e-commerce, it has Express Delivery in one hour, Same-Day Delivery, Click & Collect, and Drive Thru Services to provide the best customer experience. In addition to the convenient virtual shopping and home delivery experience, customers can enjoy various promotions, discounts and points accumulation from the comfort of their own home.

Celebrating Tops 25th Anniversary in 2021, the company, now with six food retail brands and five special store brands, operates over 125 branches of Tops market, 12 branches of Central Food Hall, seven branches of Tops SUPERSTORE, and 115 branches of Tops daily.

To cater to all lifestyles with various needs, new concept brands such as Healthiful, LOOKS, and Petster were introduced. In addition, omni-channel services are offered to provide greater convenience for customers to shop anywhere, anytime via Tops app and LINE of the nearest branch. That way customers can shop virtually using the services of personal shoppers. Food and grocery items can also be ordered through various delivery partners.

Meanwhile, the company continues to push boundaries to offer customers unparalleled shopping experiences.
