BTS opens its first rail

BTS Skytrain is the first elevated rapid transit system in Thailand, operated by Bangkok Mass Transit System PCL. The system was opened on 5 December 1999 by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The original routes were the Sukhumvit Line from Mo Chit to On Nut and the Silom Line from National Stadium to Saphan Taksin, totalling 23 stations. The provision of machinery, equipment, and technology for the construction of the BTS in 1990, as well as the MRT in 2004, the Airport Rail Link in 2010 and other systems nationwide, was undertaken by B.Grimm and its partner Siemens. As there had never before been an electric train project in Thailand and the data was very limited B.Grimm helped secure the financial deal for the BTS project with a German bank.
