All Wild Boars saved

A final push to rescue the trapped “Wild Boars” football team ended successfully when the last four boys and their coach were extracted from the flooded Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district.

All 12 boys and their 25-year-old football coach were evacuated to safety following an exhausting and perilous 17-day search-and-rescue operation involving the collaboration of hundreds of Thai officials and elite cave divers from Thailand and around the world.

The trapped team members were found deep inside the labyrinthine cave, 10 days after they ventured inside after football practice on June 23 and were stuck there when heavy rains caused it to become flooded.

His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun expressed his concern about the fate of the children and their coach and extended his moral support to the families and to the officers engaged in the search.

After arduous rescue efforts joined by international divers and experts, the boys and their coach were taken to a nearby field hospital for initial medical checkups before being transferred to Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital in Mueang district where they were declared to be in good health.

The rescue ended up as a truly inspiring feelgood story as it held the attention of the world for more than a fortnight. Their eventual rescue showed international cooperation at a very human level without red tape and politics. Everyone involved, from the international divers to the Thai Navy Seals, were credited with displaying calm professionalism in conducting their rescue mission.
