Dusit zoo closed and moved
Dusit Zoo, the country’s first public zoo and part of the recreational life of many, was permanently shut down.
A message posted on the zoo’s official Facebook site said the closure was delayed to express thanks ‘for the love and friendship the Thai people have given to the zoo’.
Some 1,300 animals were relocated to six provincial zoos while the construction of the new zoo was underway in Klong 6, Pathum Thani. It was expected to open in three years.
Those behind the project said it will have no equal in Thailand, offering detailed learning in a fun way. Importantly, it has been built with respect to the environment.
The site will house the zoo’s wild animal research and breeding centre. The new site will be three times bigger than the current one. More than 300 rai were donated for the project.
Officially, Dusit Zoo opened in 1938. But its origin goes back to 1898 when King Rama V brought some bulbs back from Europe and set up a botanical garden. After the Siamese Revolution, Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram asked for royal permission to turn Kaodin Wana into a zoo and a public park.
His Majesty the King presented a land title deed to 300 rai of land in Khlong 6, Thanyaburi district in Phathum Thani to the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry for development of the zoo.
